What Is the Importance of Gut Health for Women’s Hormone Balance?

What most women don’t realize…
is just how much the gut impacts everything when it comes to our hormones.

We often think of hormones as something separate… something that’s happening in the ovaries, thyroid, or adrenals.

But honestly, your gut is one of the most important starting points when it comes to supporting your hormones.

Gut health isn’t optional when it comes to your hormones, it’s essential.

And when your gut is not supported… your hormones feel it.

Your Gut Is Connected to More Than You Think

Your gut microbiome doesn’t just support digestion.

It supports:
✓ your immune system
✓ your mood and serotonin production
✓ your skin
✓ your body’s ability to process and eliminate hormones

In fact, approximately 90% of your serotonin, the neurotransmitter that influences mood, calm, and emotional wellbeing, is produced in the gut.

So when women start nourishing their gut, what I often see is:

→ their mood improves
→ their skin becomes clearer
→ their PMS symptoms ease
→ their energy becomes more stable

And this is where things start to click…

Because it’s not random.
It’s all connected.

The Gut–Hormone Connection Most Women Are Missing

Bristol Stool Chart: Types 1 and 2 indicate constipation, and types 5, 6 and 7 indicate diarrhea. Image source: https://www.flickr.com/photos/johnbullas/1448820757

One of the biggest patterns I see in my work…

Women are dealing with symptoms like:
→ bloating
→ poor digestion
→ constipation

…and they’ve normalized it.

But this is your body communicating with you.

Especially when it comes to bowel movements.

If you’re not having regular, healthy bowel movements (think a type 3 or 4 on the Bristol stool chart at least once per day), your body is not effectively eliminating used hormones, especially estrogen.

And what happens then?

That estrogen gets reabsorbed into the body.

This can contribute to what we often call estrogen dominance, with symptoms like:
→ heavy or painful periods
→ breast tenderness
→ headaches
→ increased PMS symptoms

So something as “simple” as constipation…
is actually deeply connected to your hormone health.

Let’s Talk About Bloating

Bloating is one of the most common things I hear from women.

And somewhere along the way…
it became something we think is “normal.”

But it’s not.

Bloating is a sign that something in the digestive process isn’t being fully supported.

This could be:
→ low stomach acid
→ poor digestion
→ gut imbalance (dysbiosis)
→ eating in a rushed or stressed state

And again, this matters for your hormones.

Because when digestion isn’t working well,
your body can’t properly break down, absorb, and eliminate what it needs to.

So bloating isn’t just uncomfortable…
it’s information.

Where Most Women Go Wrong with Gut Health

This is something I see all the time.

Women think:
“Okay, I need to fix my gut… I’ll just take a probiotic.”

So they go to the pharmacy, pick one up, and hope for the best.

But here’s the truth:

For probiotics to be effective, they need to reach your small intestine and colon, but to get there, they need to get through the harsh acidic environment of your stomach first and unfortunately, most won’t make it.

What I wish more women knew is that they can get probiotics and prebiotics from food sources.

Probiotics introduce beneficial bacteria
Prebiotics feed that bacteria

And both of these can (and should) come from food.

The idea is that we add in the beneficial bacteria (probiotic foods) and then we create an environment for it to thrive with the prebiotic foods.

The Power of Fiber (This Changes Everything)

Sidenote: if you’re currently constipated (i.e. not having a bowel movement every day and/or they are a 1 or 2 on the bristol stool chart), adding more fiber is not the first step I’d recommend, it could actually make your constipation worse. You can see what I recommend in this blog post for constipation.

If there’s one place I always start with women, it’s here.

Your gut loves fiber. But most women are simply not getting enough of it.

Fiber does two incredible things for your hormones:

✓ It helps bind and eliminate excess estrogen through the digestive system
✓ It slows the absorption of glucose into the bloodstream, supporting insulin balance and reducing inflammation

And this is where everything connects again…

Because when blood sugar is more stable,
when inflammation is lower,
when elimination is happening properly… your hormones can finally start to feel supported! Yay!

Diversity Matters More Than You Think

Another piece that often gets missed?

Diversity.

Your gut microbiome thrives on a variety of plant foods.

This is why I often encourage women to “eat the rainbow.”

Different plants provide different fibers, nutrients, and compounds, all of which help support a more diverse and resilient gut microbiome.

And the more supported your gut is, the more supported your hormones will be.

How to Start Supporting Your Gut (and Your Hormones)

This doesn’t have to be complicated.

We come back to the basics, always.

Here’s where I guide women to start:

✓ Aim to include fiber at every meal (vegetables, seeds, legumes, whole foods)
✓ Eat balanced meals instead of relying on caffeine or skipping meals
✓ Support blood sugar by combining protein, fiber, and healthy fats
✓ Include both prebiotic and probiotic-rich foods
✓ Slow down when you eat and support your nervous system

These are simple shifts…
but incredibly powerful (don’t underestimate them).

My Personal Story (And Why I Care So Deeply About This)

There was a time in my own journey where I was convinced I was doing everything “right.”

I was eating keto.
I was convinced it was the healthiest way to eat.

But what I didn’t realize?

I was including foods that were actually creating inflammation in my body.
And I wasn’t eating nearly enough fiber.

Over time, this contributed to dysbiosis (i.e. an imbalance) in my gut.

And I started experiencing the ripple effects… this included mega constipation (maybe only going to the bathroom once a week, twice if I was lucky), and PMS symptoms like tender breasts…

This is why I care so deeply about teaching women what their body truly needs.

Because it’s not about doing what’s trendy…
it’s about doing what your body actually needs.

The Bottom Line

Gut health is not just about digestion.

It’s about:
→ how your body processes hormones
→ how it eliminates them
→ how stable your energy, mood, and cravings feel

And the most powerful part?

Your body isn’t working against you.
It’s communicating with you.

And when you start supporting it in the ways it’s been asking for…
everything begins to shift.
