Why Your Nervous System Might Be the Missing Piece in Your Hormone Health
So many women feel like they’ve tried everything.
They’ve cleaned up their diet, they’re exercising regularly and they’re doing all the “right” things on paper…
And yet, they still don’t feel like themselves.
They’re tired.
Their digestion is off.
Their cycles are difficult or unpredictable.
Their mood and energy feel all over the place.
This Is for You If…
✓ You feel tired but wired
✓ You have trouble falling asleep or wake up during the night
✓ You experience bloating, constipation, or digestive discomfort
✓ Your cycle feels irregular or symptoms are getting worse
✓ You feel like you’re always “on” and can’t fully relax
What the Nervous System Actually Is (In Simple Terms)
Your nervous system is constantly scanning your environment and your body for one thing:
Am I safe?
When the body perceives stress, whether it’s physical, emotional, or even subtle,
it activates the sympathetic nervous system (often called “fight or flight”).
This is a beautiful, protective response.
It increases alertness, redirects energy, and prepares the body to respond.
But the body is not designed to stay in this state all the time.
It also needs access to the parasympathetic nervous system,
often referred to as “rest and digest.”
This is the state where:
→ digestion improves
→ recovery happens
→ hormones can regulate more effectively
→ sleep becomes deeper and more restorative
Health is not about eliminating stress completely,
it’s about your ability to move between these states.
The Stressors You Might Not Even Realize
We often think of stress as big, obvious things.
But in reality, the body also responds to everyday patterns like:
→ rushing to get out the door in the morning
→ intermittent fasting or skipping meals
→ high-intensity workouts without enough recovery
→ constantly multitasking or making decisions
→ not sleeping enough
These aren’t “bad” once in while.
But when they happen consistently, without enough recovery or support,
they can keep the body in a more activated state.
Many women don’t know that jogging or running can trigger the fight or flight response in the body, especially if chronic stress is already a factor.
Why This Matters for Your Hormones
When the body perceives ongoing stress,
it prioritizes immediate survival and energy needs.
As a result, other processes may become less of a priority in that moment, including:
→ digestion
→ reproductive hormone signaling (like ovulation)
→ thyroid function
→ sleep regulation
This doesn’t mean these systems shut down completely,
but they can become less supported when the body doesn’t feel safe.
This is why supporting the nervous system, alongside things like balancing blood sugar,
can have such a meaningful impact on hormone health.
What I See All the Time
When a woman’s nervous system is dysregulated, it can show up as:
→ difficulty falling asleep or waking during the night
→ digestive issues (bloating, constipation, or diarrhea)
→ painful/irregular cycles or missed ovulation
→ feeling tired but wired
→ energy crashes throughout the day
It looks different for everyone…
but the common thread is that the body doesn’t feel fully at ease.
What I Actually Teach Women to Do
This isn’t about adding more to your plate.
It starts with awareness.
We look at what’s currently happening in your day-to-day life
and identify what you actually have the power to shift.
From there, we begin to gently support the nervous system throughout the day.
This can look like:
✓ slowing down where possible (your morning routine, your commute, even how you apply your skincare)
✓ bringing more presence into everyday moments
✓ adjusting exercise intensity, especially during the luteal phase
✓ getting natural sunlight to support your circadian rhythm
✓ creating small pockets of calm regularly (this can be as simple as a physiological sigh once or twice per day)
This is what I call real self-care.
Not something you do once in a while…
but something woven into your life.
What Happens When the Body Starts to Feel Safer
Imagine waking up feeling rested with abundant energy that lasts all day.
When women begin supporting their nervous system in this way, especially alongside other key pieces, things start to shift.
Over time, I’ve seen:
→ sleep improve
→ digestion become more regular
→ cycles return and feel more easeful
→ mood stabilize
→ energy feel more steady
Because the body is no longer spending as much time in a heightened stress state,
so it has more capacity to support regulation, repair, and balance.
My Personal Experience
Back in 2016, I was struggling with my health.
And I had no idea that from the moment I hit snooze 5+ times every morning and rushed to get out the door…
I was activating my stress response all day.
Even though I felt like I had things “under control,”
my nervous system was constantly on high alert.
On top of that, I was dieting
and doing high-intensity workouts,
not realizing I was adding even more stress to my poor body.
And somehow, I found my way into a yoga teacher training.
Looking back, it’s like my body knew exactly what it needed… nervous system regulation.
I loved the training, and needed it so much,
that after my 200-hour training, I continued on and completed another 300 hours.
That’s where I truly began to understand how vital the nervous system is.
Recap
You can be doing everything “right”…
But if your body doesn’t feel safe,
it won’t prioritize some of the “luxury” functions we’d like it to.
But when you begin to support your nervous system, everything starts to shift.
